Audubon runs a small bird reserve with a lake with an island that gets crowded with water birds that are breeding and use it as a night roost. Get here just before sunset and you will be treated to a great display when all the birds arrive.

(My favorite place) The Venice rookery is a spectacular birders paradise. The rookery is a very small island in the the middle of a pond where birds go to roost and nest. In the winter they show their breeding plummage and mating dances. You will see Great blue heron, Great egrets, Snowy Egrets, Anhinga, ducks, turtles and alligators. Worth the drive and easy access off of 41. Go about 1 hour before sunset to watch the nighttime show. As the sun is setting be sure to look to the left to see the hundreds of bats coming out of their boxes. It’s just spectacular as watching the birds. Be sure to bring along binoculars and a camera.

The VAAS Rookery is one of Venice, Florida's best kept secrets. Those who discover this treasure understand the reason why. Photographers and birders from near and far come to the rookery to enjoy and photograph nesting birds during January, February and March. Although these months are the busiest time of the year, the rookery has visitors all year round. Directions to the VAAS Rookery From the North, take US 41 (Tamiami Trail) south 1/2 mile past Rt. 776. Turn right onto Annex Road at the Anderson Sarasota County Administration/Court House building. Follow Annex Road to rookery on right.

Small bird sanctuary around a small waterway - watch birds return just before dark to roost for the night. Lots of water birds hang out here!
