This restaurant has great local food. A lot of the dishes are a little spicy though, so ask about the dishes before you order if you're not into spicy. The atmosphere is similar to a sports bar, and is great for watching events. It's frequented by locals and always busy.

If you want excellent local boiled seafood, Kenney's is your place. The atmosphere is a seafood market with an attached restaurant. It has been around as long as I can remember.

I have to add Middendorf's because it's a historic Louisiana Restaurant famous for it's thin fried catfish. The main location is in Manchac, but they recently opened one in Slidell. I absolutely love the restaurant in Manchac and have driven all the way just to eat there. I've only eaten at the Slidell location right after it opened, and it needed improvement. I will update my recommendation after my next visit.

Sightseeing
The community of the White Kitchen Preserve is named after a famous local restaurant established in the 1930's. It sat on the corner of Highway 90 and Highway 190 and was frequented by traveler's when Highway 90 was the main road from New Orleans to the Mississippi coast. The preserve offers beautiful views of nature, including trees, land and water animals, and birds. It's not maintained as well as it should be, but it's still worth checking out.

Fort Pike was built after the war of 1812 and is still standing, although suffering some weather damage the last few years. It offers beautiful views and has been the site for many recent movies filmed in the area.

Jayne Mansfield died in a car accident in Slidell on June 29, 1967 while travelling Highway 90 from Biloxi to Mississippi. The crosses marking her death site are replaced often. She was a famous blond bombshell, and is also mother to Law & Order: SVU's Mariska Hargitay.
