This is a neighborhood restaurant with tasting menu options. It is a more upscale experience with amazing food and drinks. It is a short walk from the apartment and could pair really nicely with a trip to the Sky Lagoon as the perfect Icelandic date night.

Neighborhoods

The apartment is situated in Kársnes, the area of downtown Kópavogur. There is a number of restaurants, Brikk bakery, Krambúðin (minimart open late), and the home of the wonderful Sky Lagoon. It is an old neighborhood with a view of the Reykjanes peninsula. During the recent eruptions, it was possible to see the glow from the volcano in the backyard of our house.

Here is a visual representation of the location of the apartment. If you are driving yourself, it is easiest to continue on Borgarholtsbraut (yellow arrows) past the Kopavogur Swimming Pool and Mossley, and then turn left on Suðurbraut. Then you will pass two different streets and you will see our house on the corner, with a deck on the top and a tire swing in the yard. Once you pass the tire swing, you will see a gravel parking spot to your left. Note that if you do drive down Vallargerði, it is a one way street (as indicated on the map with the red arrow). The star on the map indicates where the parking spot is. There are two parking spots next to eachother. One for the airbnb on the left (with only enough space for one car), and the other on the right is for the house next door on the opposide corner.

To Do

Sky Lagoon is a geothermal spa by the Kársnes Harbour, Kópavogur, an industrial area of the neighborhood. When you enter the lagoon, you are transformed to a tranquil and seemingly remote area that provides the perfect relaxation and experience for your trip to Iceland. Some people loved it so much, that they went twice during their trip to Iceland.

Grocery Stores

This is a local discount grocery store that is located in Hamraborg. Here is the best place to do a large amount of shopping if you are looking to buy groceries during your visit to Iceland. Krónan and Bónus are the cheapest grocery stores in Iceland. This Krónan location is smaller, but there is a larger one in Krónan Lindum with more selection.

Shopping

If you’ve arrived in Iceland and realized you forgot an item of clothing that you need, there is an H&M here. There is also a great second hand store called Extraloppan, where you can find second hand Icelandic sweaters or winter wear that you possibly forgot to bring or couldn't fit in your suitcase.

The Icelandic government owns and controls the chain of liquor stores in Iceland. These stores are the only places that you can buy alcohol. Some grocery stores will have alcoholic beverages, but they will all be below 2.25% alcohol content. These liquor stores have limited opening hours, with none being open past 8pm, some in the countryside only open for an hour on weekdays, and all of them are closed on Sundays. Closest Vínbúðin to the apartment: Dalvegur 2 201 Kópavogur Opening hours: Monday – Friday: 10am – 8pm Saturday: 11am – 6pm Sunday: Closed

Travel with Layers

The weather in Iceland can be really unpredictable. One moment could be rain and the next could be sun. The best advice I could give would be to pack with a bunch of layers that you can take off or add on, depending on what you're doing.

Don't Buy Bottled Water

Pure water from the tap in Iceland is some of the best water you can find anywhere in the world. Bottled water is one of the biggest tourist traps. I definitely recommend bringing a refillable water bottle, or splurging for one bottled water but fill it up and reuse it during your trip here. A fun story: when Coca-Cola wanted to start producing their products here in Iceland, they requested a water sample to see if it would be acceptable. When they got a sample of Icelandic water, they responded: "No, we need a sample that hasn't been purified," to which we responded, "That isn't purified."

Buses, Taxis, and Electric Scooters

While we have a free parking space for you to use at your disposal, there is a large bus hub, Hamraborg, just a 10 min walk from the apartment. You can see the bus schedule on the Straeto website or app. The bus costs 490kr/person and you can pay via the app or on the bus (but you won't get cash back). The Hreyfill Taxi company can also be useful (and expensive!) and you can order one via their app or by phone. Electric scooters are also popular in the area and you can download the HOPP or ZOLO apps to pay and use them. The apps also show where the closest scooter is to you.

Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon

Some of these lagoons and attractions are best booked ahead of time, as they can fill up and be unavailable to book when you arrive. If you have a rough idea of when you will be in what area, I would definitely try and book ahead anything that you don't want to miss.

Information about showering before swimming in Iceland

It is very important to wash without your swimming suit before entering one of the thermal pools in Iceland. We use as little chlorine as possible and we ask that all guests wash thoroughly prior to entering to keep the water as clean as possible. Many swimming pools have added privacy stalls for those that are shy showering with other people around, but I promise that no one is looking at you and everyone is really just trying to get their swimsuit on their wet body without falling over.

Save on Alcohol Prices at the Duty Free

The duty free at the airport has some of the best prices for alcohol, so always a good idea to stock up while waiting for your bags at the airport if you are intrested in purchasing alcohol during your visit.
