Fascinating place - it was built by William Gillette in the early 1900's. He was the first guy to play Sherlock Holmes and was incredibly eccentric. The castle is filled with art and weird doors. We really enjoyed walking down to the riverbank. Great family outing!

Food scene
Dope sandwiches! Truly amazing and they are giant! Good coffee and the people are incredibly friendly! If you are allergic to cats, you should definitely avoid though!

This place is a little further away in Deep River (maybe 25 minutes) but the breakfast is well worth it! Try the eggs benedict or "bennies". You will not regret it! Also, very kid friendly and the staff is very nice. Sunday mornings are busy but any other morning you will most likely be seated right away.

As New Yorkers, we have VERY high pizza standards! This is not NY pizza (nobody is perfect after all) but very decent for CT. Unless you want to drive a hundred miles to Brooklyn, we suggest this place as the best local pizza.

Note: This is incredibly high praise as one of the owners is originally from the UK. Also, they have a fish market as well, so you can grab fresh seafood to throw on the grill later:)

Note: There are no ketchup or hot sauce packets available, so you have to add condiments there or make sure you have a giant bottle of ketchup at home. In our experience, kids will not even consider a bite without ketchup!

Definitely a chain restaurant but solid burgers and always a hit with the kids! They do this half onion ring, half fries thing called O-fries that are a family favorite and their hot dogs are bad either. Wouldn't recommend you stay there to eat, we mostly use this place for takeout.

We always have a great time at this beach! The kids amuse themselves for hours and there are food options if you don't feel like packing lunch. Bring a book, some beach chairs, an umbrella and prepare to relax!

Awesome place to pull over and have a picnic followed by a wade in the river! If you have kids, we highly recommend that you go get a sandwich from a nearby spot called "Two Wrasslin' Cats" and then head over to the park, have a picnic, then throw on some water shoes and go wading.

You really do need a car in Connecticut!
As New Yorkers accustomed to being able to walk or jump on the subway to get to just about anything, this was an adjustment. We quickly discovered that everything in Connecticut is somewhere between a 15-to-25-minute drive away! That being said, our area has a pretty vibrant community of bike riders. We think they are nuts, but they do seem to enjoy themselves. Feel free to join them if you wish!
