Neighborhoods

Zona Rosa (or the Pink Zone) is Mexico City's gayborhood and it draws many comparisons to LA's Weho or Chicago's Boystown. Calle Amberes is the main stretch for bars and clubs but the neighborhood is also bordered by the famous Paseo de la Reforma and the iconic Angel de la Independencia.

Located in the Historic Center of Mexico City, Calle Republica de Cuba is home to the city's original queer neighborhood and today has many large LGBTQ+ clubs, bars and cantinas.

Mexico City's Roma neighborhood is probably its most famous, thanks to the Netflix film 'Roma.' It has a very hipster, trendy vibe but it's also extremely beautiful thanks to the many uniquely colored houses, lush landscapes, and interesting street life.

Perhaps the slightly older, more mature sister to Roma, La Condesa is one of Mexico City's most trendy and expensive colonias. It's home to two incredible parks (Parque España and Parque Mexico), not to mention nightlife hubs along Ave Tamaulipas and Calle Durango. But it's a bit lacking when it comes to queer and LGBTQ-friendly spots.

Nightlife

Rico opened up in 2019 and it's quickly risen to become one of the city's best LGBTQ clubs. It offers three levels of entertainment (each with different vibes) and a rooftop along with excellent DJs and some of the very best drag queens. But be warned: the wait to get in on the weekend can take hours.

La Purisima is one of the OG mega clubs located in Centro and after a year long remodeling, it still packs in the crowds like few other places. People love it for the young crowd, drink specials, and the strippers that bare it all.

Blow Bar opened just as the pandemic took hold but they've managed to become a popular spot – thanks in no small part to the XXX stripper shows, reggaeton playlists, and dark room.

Marrakech Salon is loved and hated by so many Chilangos. It's a place pretty much everyone has been. It's casual and fun and a very typical LGBTQ Mexican scene – which is why I often start the That Gay Gringo tours here.

Divina – together with the sister clubs Teatro and La Terraza – are a large club located just off the famous Plaza Garibadi (home to tequila and mariachi!)

A quintessential Mexico City gay bar – this place can get pretty raunchy. In fact, on Sunday it's puro hombre (men-only) and you'll get a full-frontal show that often times you even get to participate in – whether you want to or not. It's not a glamorous spot but cheap drinks, good drag queens, and XXX.

One of my favorite weekend hangouts in Centro! It's a great spot to go and chill over some micheladas and great drag entertainment!

This community ran spot does a little bit of everything and some how they do it all well! From cutting edge art openings to vogue classes to drag make up tutorials and dance parties, I truly love this spot. It also happens to be a public comedor (kind of like a soup kitchen) during the week, when folks from the LGBT+ community (and beyond) can come in and get a full meal for just $11 pesos.

Easily one of my favorite cantinas, La Botica is great for pregaming. I highly recommend their mezcal cocktails! Although the spot in Zona Rosa is my favorite, there are several locations across the city.

Sightseeing

If you're looking for something amazing to do on a Sunday (and you're not too hungover), then a visit to La Lagunilla is a must-do. This sprawling part antique market/part swap meet is THE place to be on a Sunday. Be sure to order a michelada with all the fixings and peruse the many, many items for sale.

Many cities around the world are home to a Museum of Tolerance, but the Mexico City one is just spectacular and well worth a visit to brush up on your knowledge of the history of violence and hate committed against people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Food scene

If you love tasty food and supporting the LGBTQ+ community, you have to get an order of incredible flauts at Fiu Fiu – a super cute spot located in Roma Norte.

City/town information

A favorite weekend escape for Chilangos and tourists alike, Tepo is a Pueblo Magico just over an hour from central Mexico City. It's set against a backdrop of beautiful mountains with ancient ruins that you can hike up to, has excellent restaurants, tons of beautiful hotels and spas, and is just a great place to experience a more chill, tranquil pace of metropolitan Mexico City.

Don't skip public transport

Buses, the Metro, colectivos, and the Metrobus are all very safe and efficient ways to get around the city. They're also very affordable – just about $5 or $6 pesos depending on the service. Thanks to the city's traffic, they're almost always the quickest way to get from Point A to Point B.

Mexico City Weather

There are three seasons so to speak in CDMX. 1) Rainy Season: June-November. Nice warmdays, usually sunny or partly cloudy. Evenings typically are rainy (often torrential rains) but usually last from 5pm-8pm. Evenings can get quite cool. 2.) Cold Dry Season: After the rainy season ends, the city experiences a quick shift to a very dry winter with awful air quality and it can get quite cold – sometimes down to freezing at night. 3. Warm Dry Season: From March-June. Very dry and warm days (sometimes up to 90F). Thankfully nights can still be chilly.
