Local History

Flagler and Volusia counties are full of rich local history. Our area dates back to the Seminole Indians, Ponce de Leon and the beginning of NASCAR.
Bulow Plantation Ruins is literally right next to you. All you do is take a left out of Bulow Plantation RV park onto Old Kings Road and go to the 2nd dirt road on your left and you’re there. Admission to the park is $4 per car for the day. Park is open 9am - 5pm Thursday - Monday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. This is a great place to learn about local history from the early 1800’s. This is what we call “The Real” Florida. The ruins of the historic sugar mill are amazing to see. There are several hiking trails from just a nice short walk from the parking lot to the ruins or several miles to 6 miles one way. If you brought your kayak, canoe or paddle board you can launch from the park as well. If you’re feeling strong you can paddle the 6 miles one way down to High Bridge. You can spend several hours just sightseeing around the park or all day hiking and paddling. No matter what you decide this park is too close to just pass by.

It only takes a moment to appreciate this amazing tree. The Fairchild Oak is at least 400 years old. Just imagine what this tree has seen in it’s time.

Trails

We have lots of great nature/hiking trails in the area. You can go by foot or bicycle.
If you like hiking then this is the trail for you. This is a 6 mile + hiking trail depending on what trails you take. You can actually pick the 6 mile hike up in 3 different places. The start of the trail is here at the Bulow Creek State Park/Fairchild Oak. The park has free admission along with plenty of parking and restroom facilities. You can take the Fairchild Oak Hiking Trail 3 miles to Walter Boardman road to where you can turn around or continue another 3 miles on the Bulow Woods Trail where you will end at the Sugar Mill Ruins. About 1.5 miles into the hike you can take a detour onto the red trail which is a 1.4 mile loop.
