A popular legend tells of three brothers, who had become lost in the fog, as they navigated the River Cértima and were guided to the Pateira. Impressed by the beauty of the region, they decided to stay and fished the waters of the river to sell to the neighboring villages. The three brothers (André, Domingos and Tomé) then tried to give the area a name, and began to argue. The youngest proposed Ferment and quickly got into conflict with the other two, leading to a duel. From the Portuguese name for ferment+duel developed the name Fermentelos.

Pateira de Fermentelos - a natural lake formed from the confluences of the Cértima and Águeda Rivers. It is the largest natural lake in the Iberian peninsula, and a zone rich in flora and fauna, including species of aquatic birds, such as: the little bittern, purple heron kingfisher, western marsh harrier, black kite and various types of duck. In addition, local fish, such as largemouth bass, Esox, carp, mullet, and perch, and the commercial popularity of crayfish and rays, support the freshwater fishing industry of the region.

He took advantage of the stream that ran through the park to develop a space with ponds and fountains inserted in the surrounding trees. Has bandstand Art Nouveau late staircase with fountain, waterfall and some tile panels and Avenue of Lindens and Tea House .

The greatest of these bogs, known as Pateira, is a privileged crossing or wintering sit for migratory water bird species. As you go through the interpretive trails, you will be able to watch, among others, the great tit, the diving duck, the coal tit, the gull, the tufted duck, the crested tit or the European herring gull. Visit the Welcome Centre and, with a tour guided by the Reserve techniques, you must not miss the chance to discover some of these species in their natural habitat.
