My favourite beaches

This is one of the top beaches in Ireland, lovely waves, stunning sand hills, massive sandy beach. Lifeguard on duty at Banna 1, but it can be busier if weather is good. Drive to Banna 3 car park and walk up over the sand hill to get to a gorgeous beach. Approx 15 min drive from Tralee. Whether you’re a swimmer, surfer or just a gentle walker, it’s a very special beach. It’s as beautiful on a windy, wavy day as it is on a clear, sunny day.

Another great beach, lots of space , Sandhills and waves. Can drive up to the beach. Situated right on Ballyheigue village. You can get ice cream and treats, teas and coffees and have a picnic on the beach. Lifeguard on duty. Great walk over to Blackrock island if the tide is out. Approx 45 mins each way, depending on fitness. Can walk onto island, very special, very remote. If you have kids, great playground opposite beach, with amazing beach and west Kerry mountain views.

Stunning beach with spectacular cliffs. Approx 18 km from Tralee, really worth a visit, in any weather. Beautiful wavy beaches, historically three designated beaches, divided by cliffs..the Men’s beach, Ladies beach and the more isolated Nun’s beach ( only accessible by steps from the old convent!!) The Nuns and the convent are gone to pasture now! Gorgeous cliff walk that rivals any in the world. Ballybunion town is a seaside town that has seen better days, thriving in the 80’s, but never moved with the times. They Did however get a visit from President Bill Clinton ( he played the world famous golf club here) and he is honoured with a fine statue in the town!

Walks

Beautiful old oak wood that survived destruction from a motorway because there are very few genuine woods like this in existence any more. Little wood that can be accessed easily by turning off at Ballingarry Hotel on the outskirts of town, 15 min drive approx. There are great paths and some people cycle it, some loops to walk, jog or bike. Very pretty and special. Good for all ages and fitness levels. You could go for refreshments in the beautiful Ballyseede Hotel afterwards for lunch or a drink, beautiful gardens to the rear where kids can run around and some quirky animals live there, dogs, Shetland ponies, donkeys and deer. Fabulous.

Killarney is a tourist favourite. I feel the town is over crowded in the summer, but an early morning trip out to the park for amazing walks, bike routes is well worth it. Bikes can be hired easily and the routes are generally flat. Head for Torc waterfall, Dinis cottage, Muckross , etc. There is a petrol station called The Flesk, on the far side of town, out past the INEC center and Gleneagle hotel, it has bikes for rent and you can hop on the designated walking trail from there, traffic free except for the odd jaunting horse and cart!

Our town park is famous for its lovely rose gardens. They are stunning in summer. There are accessible paths throughout the park and a fine playground if that is what you’re after. Locals like to jog around its perimeter and there is a Park Run every Saturday morning, if you’re interested. It is one of the nicest amenities in our town and lovely to grab a coffee from a nearby cafe and walk or sit and people watch. Some of the trees are over 200 years old.

15 min walk from home. A lovely calm spot at the edge of town, opposite Tralee Aquadome. Nice for a gentle walk around the lake and a lovely cafe serving filling lunches with good views. Lots of kids activities, climbing walls, paddle boats, bird spotting etc. Something different.

Hotels to drop into

Very special hotel, not so well known. Beautiful grounds and rooms inside on ground floor are spectacular. Gardens to rear ideal for a drink, lunch etc. A nice place to relax after a walk through Ballyseedy woods next door. And it is rumoured to be a haunted castle, they’re friendly, I believe! Benners is in the heart of Tralee town centre. It is a gem that you might pass by, concealed outdoor courtyard to the rear. Great for sunny afternoons, child friendly. It is next door to the historic St Johns church, an architectural beauty, religious or not, worth a visit, a calm spot in the middle of a busy town. Benners is a great stop for a beverage, brunch, lunch. Our impressive town park is a short walk past the side of the church.

5 minute walk from my home. I can not recommend this place enough!! Family run hotel, great coffee, beverages, brunch lunch, bar food. Great patio for sunny afternoon teas, coffees or gins! After a walk in the park, or a bit of shopping in our town centre, this is a great resting spot.

10 mins from home. In the centre of town, always busy with locals, but they will find you a spot. If you want a traditional Irish dinner, this is the place. Well priced. In he mornings, it is lovely for a coffee and scone or tart. Worth a visit. And the Guinness is great here.
