Arts & Culture

This temple literally translates to "Literature & War" temple. It pays tribute to the deities related to both these virtues. It was built in 1847 and is the largest Man Mo temple in Hong Kong. It's really interesting to see its ancient architecture surrounded by large modern buildings in the heart of the financial district.

Interesting exhibits on both traditional Chinese medicine and how Western medicine was introduced to the local population, e.g., the outbreak in bubonic plague that the colonial government sought the need to broadly introduce Western medicine into the population.

Sightseeing

Peak is probably the most famous point of interest in Hong Kong. It's the highest point on Hong Kong island and gives you a spectacular view of Kowloon. What's also quite interesting was that the local population wasn't allowed to reside here for much of the early days of the colony. There are sign posts along the way that would indicate the city bounds and at which point locals would have to be granted special permission to go beyond. Victoria Peak is very hike able. From the apartment you can walk up to HKU, look for the exit on Kotewall Road. Then from there take the morning trail all the way up to the peak. Would take about 3 hours.

This building which was built in 1892 was once the living quarters for nurses during WWII. It was then turned into a mental hospital after the war and in the 70s there were rampant rumours of ghost sightings. It's haunted reputation and the fact that there was a methadone clinic nearby made the place unwelcome and the building fell into disrepair. The government decided to restore the building in 2001 and it now serves as a community complex. Methadone clinic no longer exists.

It was first a temple, then a school, and then barracks for married policemen and their families. It's now home to dozens of small galleries selling products from local designers. This includes jewellery, leather goods, prints, housewares, etc... Great place for souvenirs. There are also a few great restaurants and bakers.
