Food Scene

The food is gorgeous at this cool café-cum-restaurant on the main road: eggs benedict, merguez sausages and beef brisket often appear on the ever-changing breakfast menu. Be warned, portion sizes can be meagre, especially if you're going for Sunday brunch, when high demand seems to create smaller dishes. For lunch/brunch you'll find unusual things like sweet potato and leek cakes or baked eggs with chili and sage. Lunches are light — quiche, cakes, quinoa — and dinner is a selection of small plates, like toasted almonds, barbecue pork ribs and homemade baba ghanoush. All very tasty. The London Particular is very popular but only opens after 5pm on Friday and Saturday, so book in advance.

Chinwag's Twitter profile promises homemade burgers 'the size of your face' (£6.99), and they don't disappoint: thick patties of veggie, chicken, lamb or beef — we like the beef best — with relish, aioli, lettuce and tomato in light sesame buns oozing over big, pretty ceramic plates. As well as giant burgers they also do big breakfasts. Order poached eggs, crispy hash browns, hunks of ham, sausages and fried tomatoes, or for smaller appetites there's granola, yoghurt, berries, you name it. But there's more to this cool café than a lack of portion control, the decor is worth a mention too. You enter via a red telephone box door and pee behind a replica of the door to number10 Downing Street.

Sisters Sevjan Melissa and Akjen Havali set up this café in late 2013. It serves Turkish-influenced food with a modern twist such as baklava, lavender cakes and chocolate-infused Quorn chilli. There's plenty of cool, colourful items of decor, including gold lamps with multicoloured jewels and a piano in the back that add up to make this place a cut above. Hot drinks come from local suppliers — the coffee is from Hackney-based Climpson’s and Sons and the tea is from local company Birchall’s. The staff make an excellent flat white: nutty and rich but not burnt. The sisters have applied for an alcohol licence and are planning late openings with movie screenings and live music nights soon.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Amersham is a long-established destination music venue. The Bluetones and Bloc Party have played here as well as less mainstream acts like DJ Yoda and The Connectors. It's also home to Happy Mondays, a regular comedy night. Previous acts include Holly Walsh, Joe Lycett and Matt Green. If you just want a pint of an evening or to nurse your hangover at the weekend, it’s good for that too — Goldsmiths alumnus Rose Walsh has just set up Bert's Kitchen upstairs, she'll be serving burger and beer deals and roasts on a Sunday.

Shopping

Brockley Market is on our list of 50 reasons to love South London and with good reason. It's cheaper and less busy than Borough Market, but with a good range of street food, fish, cheese, fresh fruit, veg and meat from the Moo Man and The Butchery.
